According to a press release from Luxembourg Railways (CFL) published on Friday 27 February, Luxembourg trains carried 31.4 million passengers in 2025. An increase of 0.57% compared with 2024.
As in previous years, the Luxembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette - Rodange line remains the busiest on the network, despite a slight decline of 1.54%, with 9.771,599 passengers in 2025.
This is followed by the Northern line (Luxembourg - Ettelbruck - Troisvierges - Gouvy), up 2.47% to 6.995,764 passengers, and by the Luxembourg - Thionville - Metz cross-border route, which recorded an increase of 2.56% to 6,057,946 passengers.
Other routes also showed growth, including Luxembourg - Bascharage-Sanem - Rodange - Athus/Longwy (+3.02%) and Luxembourg - Wasserbillig - Trier (+0.18%). Only the Luxembourg - Kleinbettingen - Arlon line fell more sharply (-3.99%).
Investments to accompany the increase
The CFL indicate that this new increase comes against a backdrop of multi-annual investment programmes. The gradual entry into service of 34 new Coradia Stream High Capacity railcars should make it possible to increase the number of seats by 46%.
In the press release, CFL’s Managing Director, Marc Wengler, stresses that “the trend in passenger numbers is unequivocal. On the one hand, it testifies to the attractiveness of CFL’s multimodal mobility offering; on the other, the ever-increasing use of our trains confirms the role of rail as the backbone of the public transport network at national and cross-border level.”
The Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, for her part, believes that “the figures for 2025 confirm the relevance of the measures taken by the government to strengthen the place of the train in national multimodal mobility”.
The Director of Passenger Activities at CFL, Sophie Lacour, adds: “To ensure that the train remains attractive over the long term, we regularly improve our offer, as we will on the occasion of the timetable change on 14 December 2025 with an increase in connections to the north of the country, the strengthening of the offer in the Käldall as well as a direct train to Libramont.”
