The Automobile Club du Luxembourg (ACL) launched a study during September on electromobility and the results show that the people questioned are not yet convinced by this type of motorisation. Of the 1,075 responses received, 62% explained that they currently drive a hybrid or combustion engine, and of these, 39% do not want to switch to an electric vehicle, 15% will switch within the next five years and 46% do not know whether they will switch within five years.
This shows that there are still those who are resistant to this motorisation, while the share of new 100% electric cars registered each year in Luxembourg has risen from 0,2% in 2015 to 27.4% in 2024, an increase of more than 100%, making electric cars the second most popular motorisation after petrol, which accounted for 29.6% of registrations in 2024. In terms of charging infrastructure, Luxembourg currently has 3,000 public charging points, an average of one charging point per kilometre of road.
Klimabonus grants
"Since the introduction of Klimabonus grants for the installation of private charging points, almost 11,000 applications for subsidies have been submitted to the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity", says Klima-Agence. In an attempt to convince, reassure the wary or add another string to the bow of electromobility enthusiasts, the latter is organising with ACL the event (accessible free of charge) GO electric day, on Sunday 19 October from 11am to 5pm at the Coque.
The recent study carried out by the ACL highlights the main concerns of its members regarding electric mobility. These include range, purchase cost and charging facilities. "Although 38% of those questioned already use a 100% electric car, often as their main vehicle, a large proportion of the population is still reluctant to take the plunge. The brakes most often cited are a range deemed insufficient, prices that are too high and limited access to charging points, despite a well-developed public network in Luxembourg," confirms the ACL press release.
Vehicle trials
More than 30 exhibitors and 70 electric cars will be presented at GO electric day. On the programme: test drives (comparing models in real-life conditions), integrating electric mobility into the home, practical solutions for the various aspects of a project (financing, leasing, charging points, etc.), and an immersive experience. All this with activities for all the family and a major competition.
"With almost 65% of electric car owners in Luxembourg also having photovoltaic panels, decarbonising the home appears to be a relevant way forward. The combination of an electric vehicle, a photovoltaic installation and a heat pump means that energy costs can be better controlled, while relying on clean, forward-looking technologies and strengthening energy resilience," adds Klima-Agence.
