Generating electricity without building new infrastructure. That is the aim of the solar carport that the municipality of Niederanven and Enovos inaugurated on 16 June in Oberanven. Installed above the car park at the Maison Relais, the structure will generate around 500MWh of green electricity per year whilst retaining its primary function as a parking area.

The Prime Minister, Luc Frieden (CSV), mayor Fréd Ternes, government representatives and several project partners attended the inauguration. Built on an existing car park, the installation demonstrates an approach that involves using existing spaces to accommodate new renewable energy generation capacity. The car park remained accessible during the works and continues to serve users on a daily basis.

Local production of renewable energy

The solar carport has an installed capacity of 519.72kWp. According to data provided by the project developers, it will generate around 500MWh of green electricity each year. This output will contribute to the local electricity supply and prevent nearly 97 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.

The municipality of Niederanven sees this project as part of a broader strategy linked to the energy transition. For several years now, it has been developing various projects in the fields of energy, mobility and climate protection. The aim is, in particular, to boost local renewable energy production and reduce the area’s carbon footprint.

A partnership between the local council and Enovos

The project is the result of a partnership between the municipality of Niederanven and Enovos. “The energy transition is built on concrete actions and projects that create lasting value for citizens. This solar carport is fully in line with this vision,” says Fréd Ternes, mayor of Niederanven.

The elected representative believes that this type of infrastructure helps address energy challenges whilst preserving existing uses. The project is one of several initiatives being led by the local council, which is also developing energy communities and investing in infrastructure linked to the climate transition.

Making the most of existing infrastructure

For Enovos, the project illustrates the energy system’s shift towards generating power closer to where it is consumed. “Making the most of existing infrastructure is a key driver for accelerating the development of renewable energy whilst preserving current uses,” says Erik von Scholz, CEO of Enovos.

The two partners also emphasise the importance of a framework that supports the development of renewable energy. Through this project, they are promoting an approach that aims to integrate solar power generation into existing spaces within the region, without requiring new land to be acquired.
