Mario Hirsch, former adviser to Gaston Thorn, former editor-in-chief of Lëtzebuerger Land and former director of the Institut Pierre Werner, has died. Hirsch was 74.

Mario Hirsch has died, his wife Zamira Pode Hirsch announced on Facebook the evening of Tuesday 25 July. Hirsch, who graduated with a degree in law and political science from the Institut d’études politiques de Paris, joined the cabinet of prime minister Gaston Thorn (DP) in 1974.

From 1983 to 1985, he was personal adviser to US businessman Clay T. Whitehead, personal adviser and then telecommunications specialist to US President Richard Nixon, and one of the two people behind the creation of SES.

For ten years he was secretary of the Luxembourg DP, before becoming editor-in-chief of the Lëtzebuerger Land from 1998 until 2006. At that time, he joined the Institut Pierre Werner as its director.

Hirsch was also one of the writers for Paperjam’s first magazine, released in June 2000. Together with Jean-Lou Siweck, he wrote the .
