Following the post-Covid boom, domestic tourism has stabilised. According to Statec, in 2024, residents travelled an average of 35 days a year – just over a month – at a cost of €1,292 per person.

The boom may be over, but figures remain exceptionally high. In 2024, Luxembourg residents made 3.2 million trips, accounting for 22 million overnight stays – an increase of 40% and 26% respectively compared with 2019, according to a Statec report. However, the spectacular growth seen in the wake of the pandemic has slowed significantly since 2023.

The Grand Duchy stands out in Europe. With an average of 35 leisure overnight stays per capita, its residents are among the continent’s most frequent travellers, neck and neck with the Swedes. This level is explained by “residents’ high incomes, the proximity of an international airport and the country’s history of migration”, explains Statec. By way of comparison, the French and Germans average between 18 and 20 overnight stays per year, and the Belgians 15.

Behind this flattering average, the divisions remain stark. Nearly 28% of households report financial difficulties. They travel less, taking 3.7 trips a year compared with 5 for the population as a whole, and have significantly cut back on their holidays. But they continue to travel to see their loved ones, even if it means paying more for these visits. “Just as many family visits, but half as many holidays,” summarises the infographic.

The cost remains substantial. A leisure holiday costs an average of €1,292 per person, driven mainly by accommodation and associated expenses. Holidays are more expensive than family visits, but the latter are holding up better in the face of budgetary constraints.

Another key finding is that tourism in Luxembourg remains overwhelmingly local. 92% of holidays are taken within Europe, often less than 300 kilometres from home. France, Germany and Spain are by far the most popular destinations, well ahead of more distant countries. Finally, a significant proportion of the population does not travel at all. In 2024, 17% of residents did not take any trips. For 35% of them, the constraint is financial. The others cite a lack of interest or health reasons.
