BGL BNP Paribas, Bil, Raiffeisen and Spuerkeess will be the first banks to roll out Wero in Luxembourg from the end of June 2026, as lenders begin a phased launch of the European payment wallet intended to succeed Payconiq.

BGL BNP Paribas, Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (Bil), Banque Raiffeisen and Spuerkeess will be the first banks to roll out Wero in Luxembourg from the end of June 2026, in the opening stage of a wider domestic launch of the European payment wallet.

The move will mark the arrival in Luxembourg of a payments tool built around instant account-to-account transfers, as banks prepare the local transition from Payconiq to Wero, the solution developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI).

The four lenders will lead the first phase of the launch, followed by Post Luxembourg in the summer and Banque de Luxembourg at a later stage, reflecting a staggered market entry as Luxembourg joins the wider European push for bank-linked mobile payments.

European payments push

Wero is designed as a digital wallet for a range of payment scenarios. Built on instant account-to-account payments, it is intended to offer users a single interface for day-to-day transactions while keeping payments data within a European framework, reducing reliance on non-European payment networks such as Visa and Mastercard.

The Luxembourg launch forms part of a broader effort to establish a European alternative in digital payments, at a time when banks and policymakers across the bloc are seeking to strengthen the region’s payments infrastructure.

How the app will work

In Luxembourg, the service will be available through the Wero app on Android and Apple devices. After downloading the application, users will have to authenticate themselves through their bank’s identification process in order to activate the service.

At launch, users in Luxembourg will be able to send and request money by entering a phone number or email address, or by generating a personal QR code. Open payment requests between individuals will also be available.

On the commercial side, the rollout will include invoice payments, in-store payments and immediate e-commerce payments. Online and in-store transactions will be made by scanning a QR code and approving the payment through the app.

Banks prepare the transition

In a joint statement to Paperjam, BGL BNP Paribas, Bil, Post Luxembourg, Raiffeisen and Spuerkeess stated that banks currently offering Payconiq in Luxembourg are participating in the rollout of Wero and working towards a coordinated transition, with a targeted launch in summer 2026.

They noted that Payconiq has become a widely adopted payment channel in Luxembourg in recent years, both for peer-to-peer transfers and everyday payments, and argued that Wero, as its successor, is expected to play a similarly important role in the future payments landscape.

The banks also emphasised that participating lenders are working closely together to prepare the launch and ensure a smooth transition for clients. They added that Wero represented an important step in the development of European payment solutions and would help improve the customer experience in Luxembourg.
