The Netherlands-based payments provider Buckaroo will take over Payconiq’s Luxembourg merchant base in early 2026 under a deal with the European Payments Initiative, paving the way for the launch of Wero in the Grand Duchy by mid-2026.

Buckaroo, Payconiq International and the European Payments Initiative (EPI) has announced a strategic partnership to bring the pan-European payments app Wero to Luxembourg. Subject to regulatory approval, Payconiq’s direct merchant portfolio in Luxembourg will be transferred to Buckaroo in early 2026. Buckaroo will then enable those merchants to accept Wero once the standalone app is launched in Luxembourg, targeted for mid-2026.

The agreement will allow Luxembourg’s consumers and merchants to access a European payment system designed to deliver instant transactions, robust security and privacy aligned with EU standards, and an integrated experience via a single application.

For merchants, the transition promises lower costs through a harmonised European platform, faster settlement to improve cash flow, and digital tools to maintain competitiveness in a digital-first economy. Buckaroo said it would ensure continuity for Payconiq’s merchant clients during the migration and prepare them for a future operating under the Wero system.

Paul Scholten, chief executive of Buckaroo, said the acquisition of Payconiq’s Luxembourg merchant portfolio “strengthens our European footprint” and described it as “more than a technical migration”. He added that the aim was to ensure “a secure and merchant-friendly transition” to Wero.

James KingJames King, authorised manager of Payconiq International, said the agreement showed the company’s commitment to “an orderly and responsible migration from Payconiq to Wero on the Luxembourg market”. He underlined that the priority was to “ensure continuity” for merchants during the transfer to Buckaroo.

Martina Weimert, chief executive of EPI Company, said that with Payconiq’s portfolio moving to Buckaroo, “Wero will be available to all merchants in Luxembourg as a payment solution”. She added that EPI was “pleased to begin serving the Luxembourg market”.

The transfer of Payconiq’s merchant portfolio to Buckaroo remains subject to regulatory review.
