Alegria brings joy to our taste buds
Half Spanish but also half Breton, Carole Lesquer, formerly of the restaurant Flûte alors!, has developed her own recipe for crêpes and regularly organises evenings based on this delicious theme. The young woman insists that it really is a family recipe, duly tested and of course approved. Made from buckwheat flour but mixed with traditional wheat flour “to make it more delicate in terms of flavour”, the crêpes are eaten every first Friday of the month, in the evening. Food lovers, the next feast will be held on 6 February, from 7:30 pm, for a tasting of sweet and savoury crêpes. “Usually, the restaurant’s menu is vegetarian but, for this particular occasion, we’re making an exception by offering vegan crêpes as well as the classic ham-cheese-mushroom”, says the young woman.

Our friend Suzette (tartiflette)
While the ambience of the place is no longer something to brag about, you may not be entirely familiar with the menu at Restaurant Häerz. But the waiters are extremely friendly, and one in particular had the good idea of suggesting—with stars in their eyes—that we try the crêpe Suzette, which is said to be one of the restaurant’s must-tries. The dessert arrives before the envious eyes of the assembly and we are hypnotised by the dancing flame… to the point of forgetting to blow on it! Never mind: even though the crêpe has started to toast slightly and we’re amused by the overall appearance of the delicacy, which reminds us from afar of… a tartiflette, the first bite is exquisite. A generous, dense crêpe, a scoop of vanilla ice-cream that has started to melt (our guilty pleasure), the right amount of Grand Marnier and the little extra: pecans here and there for a little crunch. In short, we wouldn’t say for August, but for January/February, this is the ideal dessert!

GluFree Pancake, useful address
In the heart of the Bonnevoie district, GluFree Pancake is entirely dedicated to gluten-free cooking, a precious rarity for people with allergies or coeliac disease. Its founder, Sandra Tinelli, opened the place after her daughter was diagnosed with severe gluten intolerance. Faced with the difficulty of finding safe and tasty dishes, the mother became an entrepreneur to create this place where everyone can eat with gourmet pleasure and without worry. The menu is rich and creative, with a focus on gluten-free pancakes: caprese, salmon-avocado or bacon-egg for a hearty brunch and other sweet gourmet options, such as the red fruit dessert, chocolate-banana or caramelised apples, which will delight your taste buds while preserving your microbiota.

Crêperie Moderne, tried and tested recipe
At Crêperie Moderne, the crêpe is not a dessert, it’s a philosophy. Whether savoury or sweet, they arrive golden brown, ready to play the role of chaser-spleen (hello, toxic boss!) and make you forget all about dieting (hello, slimming girdle!). The pastry is thin and supple, and can be bent to your every whim, from ham and cheese to melting chocolate. Here, you hesitate for a long time before ordering… and then you regret having taken only one. The atmosphere is relaxed and full of gourmet vibes. In short, a place where even the most serious leave with icing sugar in the corner of their mouths.

Brittany + Belgium = good organic balance
To enjoy good organic crêpes (organic buckwheat PGI imported directly from Brittany), you’ll have to cross the border for some culinary tourism in Arlon (don’t laugh, we can see you). At Crepote, the crêpes arrive well-stuffed, ready to melt even the most demanding of gourmets, as they can be personalised to order, vegan or vegetarian. Each bite is a reminder that happiness can sometimes be found in a good, organic pastry. Here, indulgence is not a flaw but a house speciality. You hesitate between savoury and sweet… but in the end, to choose is to give up, so… Pancakes that warm the heart as much as the stomach, this is great art and it’s also done in Belgium. Oufti!
