Temporary work accounts for only a fraction of employment in Luxembourg, but its share of new hires is quite different. Between January 2024 and January 2025, it accounted for 26,710 of the 168,750 new hires recorded in the country, or 16 per cent of the total, according to the General Inspectorate of Social Security (IGSS).
This figure reflects not so much a massive creation of jobs as a very high turnover rate. Over the same period, 26,740 contract terminations were recorded in the temporary work sector. The net result is, therefore, a loss of 30 jobs, whilst the labour market as a whole has created a net total of 4,290 salaried jobs.
It is in this sector, characterised by constant staff turnover, that Fedil Employment Services is organising the 11th edition of its special Luxembourg Temporary Work Fair. Twenty-five companies are set to showcase more than 3,500 vacancies at the event. The press release, published on Tuesday 1 September, however, does not specify the proportion of temporary work compared with the fixed-term and permanent contracts also on offer, nor whether these vacancies all correspond to separate posts.
Construction, industry, logistics…
The reported demand is mainly in the construction, manufacturing, logistics and transport sectors. Other vacancies are expected to be available in the service sector, hospitality, cleaning, services, retail and the medical sector. The federation cites “signs of recovery” in several sectors, an assessment that the number of vacancies on offer at the fair is not, on its own, sufficient to confirm.
The most recent data from the IGSS nevertheless show a rebound in workforce numbers. At the end of March 2026, Luxembourg had 7,313 agency workers, an increase of 8.5% year-on-year, compared with a rise of 1.2% for employees, excluding agency workers and local staff. More than 77% of agency workers were cross-border workers and 86% were men.
