16.01. «Prokofiev and Price towards modernity»
The magnificent Chicago Symphony Orchestra tours with its Music Director of 14 years, Riccardo Muti, for the last time! Watch them come together to perform two 20th-century symphonic masterpieces. African American composer Florence Price’s recently re-discovered Symphony N° 3 has won international acclaim for its imaginative scoring and melodic beauty. It is coupled here with Sergei Prokofiev’s heroic Symphony N° 5, which sets out to glorify «the grandeur of the human spirit».
23.01. «Rising star: Sebastian Heindl»
One might call him the new shooting star at the organ, so quickly has Sebastian Heindl gone from being an insider’s tip from the Central German organ scene to one of the most renowned, yet also unusual virtuosos on his instrument. With his own original compositions, the music director at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin is always good for a surprise as well, for his influences can be found not only among the long tradition of compositions for his instrument. As one of the featured artists of the ECHO Rising stars series, he allows the two worlds to meet on 23.01. in Luxembourg.
26.01. «Wagner & Ligeti: In the distance»
An unusual combination – at least at first glance. Upon closer examination, these two composers have more in common than one might assume. Not least their ability to give opulently-sized orchestras a virtuoso treatment. György Ligeti, whose centenary the music world is celebrating his season, has also become a cinematic legend for Atmosphères, which Stanley Kubrick used for 2001: A Space Odyssey. Meanwhile, there are those who claim that Richard Wagner would be working in Hollywood if he were alive today. The Luxembourg Philharmonic is led by Gustavo Gimeno in this resounding cinemascope equivalent at the Grand Auditorium, where the conductor will participate in an Artist talk in English at 18:45.
We wish you many wonderful musical discoveries this January at the Philharmonie!
