It was expected, and in fact already agreed since 2017, but it is now official: the 2023 municipal elections will take place on Sunday 11 June.
2023 has been dubbed a super-election year, as both local and national parliament elections will take place. Different issues, different campaigns, but with local elections traditionally scheduled for October, the risk of making voters go to the polls twice in a month was hardly an ideal scenario.
In 2017, it was therefore agreed to shorten the terms of office of local politicians by a few weeks so that the 2023 elections could be held in June. The parliamentary elections would be held in October, probably on Sunday the 15th. Minister of the interior (LSAP) confirmed this at a meeting with Syvicol, the association of local communes. "In view of this, amendments to the electoral law of February 2003 and the communal law of December 1988 will be announced shortly", the government stated.
