The possibility of creating a carpool lane to or from Belgium is officially under study. The information is contained in the response from the Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, to a parliamentary question on the effectiveness and future prospects of dedicated carpool and variable speed lanes on the A3 motorway.

When asked about the advisability of extending this system to the Belgian border, the Minister indicated that the project concerning the A6 motorway was currently “at the study stage”. At this stage, no approximate date for entry into service can be given. This caution contrasts with the situation on the Belgian side, where a relay infrastructure for a carpool lane is already in place, fuelling expectations of cross-border continuity.

This prospect is part of a wider context of evaluating existing carpool lanes. On the A3, the Ministry has observed a harmonisation of speeds and an improvement in traffic flow, measured using data collected by the Traffic Information Centre. Checks are carried out daily by the Grand Ducal police, although it is not possible to quantify precisely those that do not result in penalties.

The introduction of specific speed cameras to monitor compliance with carpooling rules has also been announced for 2026, subject to the completion of the dynamic signalling gantries. These should also provide users with clearer, real-time information on the times and conditions of use of the reserved lanes.

When it comes to the possibility of opening up the carpool lane to all motorists outside peak full stops, the government points out that the primary objective of the system is to encourage vehicle sharing during periods of heavy congestion. Temporary opening remains possible in the event of an exceptional incident, however, and more dynamic management could be envisaged at a later date, once the major motorway works have been completed.

In this context, the extension towards Belgium appears to be a strategic option in the medium term, but still subject to technical and operational studies. For the many cross-border commuters who use the A6 on a daily basis, the project therefore remains an open-ended prospect for the time being.
