Less than nine months after the opening of a carpool lane on the A3, linking the Berchem service area to the Gasperich cross, the authorities are going to put it under surveillance. This Monday 1st December, the Roads and Bridges Administration is announcing the commissioning of fixed speed cameras, each aimed at one direction of traffic. They are equipped with cameras to recognise silhouettes in the vehicle to determine the number of people inside.

During this test phase, no taxed warnings will be issued by the automated control and penalty system. After an initial test phase, the radar will switch to repressive mode. A lone driver using this lane “is liable to a minimum fine of €74”, the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works said when the lane was opened.

This lane is intended only for buses and vehicles with more than one person on board.
