The A3 motorway widening project is well underway and the first 2x3 lane section will open between the Gasperich exit and the Berchem service area. A lane reserved for vehicles carrying at least two people will be introduced on a specific section of the motorway in the Berchem-Gasperich direction. This priority lane for carpools and buses will allow traffic to travel at 90km/h (except at peak times, when the limit will be lowered to 70km/h). Also along these lines, a lane will also be provided on the hard shoulder and reserved for buses only.
In the other direction, from the Gasperich exit to the Berchem service area, the priority lane for carpooling and buses will be accessible as of 30 March 2025.
A single driver (without a passenger) who uses the lane reserved for carpooling is liable to a fine of €74. The lane will be marked out with signs and the vehicle must be carrying at least two people to use it.
“The opening of the first widened section fully embodies the government’s commitment to building modern, safe and sustainable infrastructure,” said mobility minister (DP), “designed to meet the current and future needs of border citizens while favouring public transport modes, including carpooling, over individual motorised transport. The opening of this first section is just one stage in a large-scale project, but it is already a strong signal in favour of more fluid and efficient mobility in Luxembourg.”
Following this first milestone in the project, work will continue. In early 2026, gantries will be installed to improve traffic flow. The section will be fully commissioned from 2030.
