Housing takes centre stage in the new edition of Paperjam magazine. Production and art direction: Serge Ricco

In its May edition, Paperjam devotes a special feature to 80 concrete proposals for getting out of the housing crisis. With ideas and practical examples, the government and players in the sector are stepping up their initiatives to avoid an economic and social impasse. Available from newsstands on Thursday 24 April.

The editorial team at Paperjam have produced a special feature on housing for the May edition of the magazine. It includes an interview with housing minister Claude MeischClaude Meisch (DP), a map of housing market prices, 80 solutions to get out of the housing crisis and feedback on the solutions put in place in Ireland.

Here’s a sneak peek of three solutions for a sustainable way out of the housing crisis. There are 77 more ideas in the magazine.

“Offer state subsidies via banks in the form of interest for first-time buyers,” say Arnaud RegoutArnaud Regout, (managing director of BPI Luxembourg), Sébastien Labis, (country manager of BPI Real Estate) and Christophe Gilain, (financial director of BPI Real Estate). “The aim of this measure is to anchor Luxembourgers and new arrivals in the country for the long term, whilst promoting VAT and registration duty entries at the time of purchase and in day-to-day expenditure, as well as improving mobility.”

“Create housing cooperatives following the example of Switzerland. The state or local authorities make land available to housing cooperatives, and the cooperatives offer a form of housing that is an intermediary between traditional renting and private ownership,” says Martine Gerber-LemaireMartine Gerber-Lemaire, managing partner at Dentons Luxembourg. “The rent is strictly linked to construction costs, and there is participatory urban planning. Tenants take shares in the cooperative society.”

“‘Abolish’ notaries and create a low-cost, efficient, fast and digital public service that would take on the role currently performed by notaries in real estate transactions,” suggests Max Leners, avocat à la cour at Leners.
