Luxembourg’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 6.2% in May to 6.4% in June, according to figures published by Statec and the employment agency Adem on 20 July. The June rate was the highest recorded since January 2021 in Statec’s monthly series.
There were 19,619 resident jobseekers available for work at the end of June, 1,733 more than a year earlier, an increase of 9.7%. The annual rise had stood at 6.5% in May. The unadjusted number fell by 55 from May, even as the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased.
The rise extended across all age groups. “The annual increase was particularly marked among the most highly qualified jobseekers,” Adem said, with their number rising by 19.1%. People aged 30 to 44 recorded the strongest increase by age, at 12.8%.
The largest increases by occupation were among people seeking secretarial and administrative work, IT jobs, accounting and management positions, and work in banking. The same broad fields had featured among the strongest increases in May.
There were 3,262 new registrations during June, 5.8% more than a year earlier. Residents accounted for 2,478 of the total, an increase of 3%, while non-resident registrations rose by 15.8% to 784.
Fewer residents receive full benefit
The number of residents receiving full unemployment benefit fell by 4.5% year on year to 9,904. The benefit figure covers a different group from the total number of jobseekers registered as available for work, while figures for the latest three months remain subject to revision when benefit entitlements are approved retrospectively.
Another 1,573 residents in professional redeployment received a waiting allowance or professional waiting allowance, 2.5% more than in June 2025. The number of residents taking part in employment-support schemes rose by 3.4% to 4,605.
Across residents and non-residents, 10,961 people received full unemployment benefit, down 4.7% from a year earlier. Residents accounted for 90.4% of recipients. The number receiving either form of waiting allowance increased by 5.4% to 3,422, with non-residents making up 54% of the total.
More openings, different occupations
“Employers declared 3,167 vacancies to Adem in June, 7.2% more than in June 2025,” the release said. The number of posts available at the end of the month also rose, increasing by 3.1% to 7,081.
New declarations record vacancies reported during June, while the second figure gives the number available at month-end. In May, declarations had increased from a year earlier but the number of available posts had fallen; both indicators were higher in June.
The strongest increases in vacancies were in construction design and planning, industrial cleaning, social and socioeducational work, and paramedical care. Jobseeker numbers rose most sharply in secretarial and administrative work, IT, accounting and management, and banking.
Non-resident registrations accelerate
The number of non-resident jobseekers available for work at the end of June rose by 25.2% to 4,144, a much faster increase than among residents. New non-resident registrations increased by 15.8% to 784 and accounted for 24% of all registrations during the month.
Of the available non-resident jobseekers, 2,421 were in external professional redeployment, 9.7% more than a year earlier. They represented 58.4% of the non-resident total and are subject to the same eligibility conditions for Adem financial support as residents.
Among non-residents with external professional redeployment status, 1,057 received full unemployment benefit, 6.4% fewer than in June 2025. Another 1,849 received a waiting allowance or professional waiting allowance, an increase of 8%.
“The other non-resident jobseekers registered with Adem did so voluntarily, without being entitled to any financial assistance,” the release said. Their number rose by 55.9% to 1,723, accounting for 41.6% of all available non-resident jobseekers.
