Luxembourg is stepping up its game in the global race for space resources. The European Space Resources Innovation Centre (Esric) has just announced the seven start-ups selected for the first phase of the sixth edition of its Start-up Support Programme, a unique initiative dedicated to technologies for the exploitation of space resources.
Behind this selection lies a clear strategy: to attract talent and harness innovation on a global scale. The selected projects come from Austria, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, South Korea and the United States. This diversity illustrates the growing importance of this sector, which is still emerging but already highly strategic. The strong Asian presence marks a turning point and confirms the intensifying international competition in these disruptive technologies.
Over the course of three months, these start-ups will receive remote support from international experts to refine their business models and ensure the success of their development. The objective is clear: to transform concepts that are still fragile into credible projects capable of attracting funding and industrial partners. The reward is the opportunity for the most promising projects to set up in Luxembourg, with the aim of fostering the emergence of locally rooted deep tech ventures.
NaubotiX, a local company
The technologies on display are setting the tone for a new space economy. From propulsion systems using materials from asteroids, autonomous robots capable of building in extreme environments, and intelligent excavation systems, to next-generation optical communications: these projects span the entire value chain of in situ resource utilisation.
Against this backdrop, Luxembourg is also making its mark with NaubotiX, a local company that develops AI-driven robotic modules suitable for use both on Earth and in space. This is a strong signal from a country seeking to consolidate its position in high-value-added technological niches.
Supported by the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA), the List and the European Space Agency (Esa), the Esric programme is gradually establishing itself as a tool for attracting and shaping an ecosystem that is still under development. With 25 projects already supported, it is helping to turn a political ambition into an industrial reality. The challenge now is to capitalise on this momentum: in the space economy, the potential is immense, but the competition has only just begun.
