At Luxembourg Airport, the first few hours of the day weigh heavily on all operational performance. The reason is structural: the majority of Luxair's aircraft spend the night on site, which concentrates departures just after the hub opens. Yet runway operations do not start until 6am, due to curfew restrictions, making the first 90 minutes decisive for keeping the airline on schedule.

To ease this bottleneck, Luxair and lux-Airport conducted an operational test over three mornings from 18 to 20 December. The idea: to play on "micro-adjustments" before the first wave of flights in order to smooth flows and secure punctuality, at a time when passenger traffic growth, fleet renewal and the expected rise in demand point to tighter peaks in the years ahead.

First lever, on the terminal side: check-in opened at 3.45am and security control at 4am, so as to absorb arrivals earlier and avoid the "bottleneck" effect later in the morning. At the same time, the organisation of flight preparation has been adjusted: some "off-block" times have been brought forward from 6am to 5.45am so that aircraft and crews are ready as soon as runway operations open at 6am, with no take-offs before that time in order to remain compliant with the regulatory framework.

A clear-cut decision for this summer

According to the two companies, the results are "clearly positive", with measurable improvements: "a smoother passenger journey thanks to reduced congestion, better preparation of aircraft at the scheduled time and a more even distribution of arrivals following early communication of adjusted schedules. Passenger feedback also points to a calmer atmosphere and a smoother experience in the early hours," explains Luxair's press release.

For the future, the project promises to be very concrete and productivity-oriented. The partners want to continue with the tests and review the organisation of check-in, making a clearer distinction between zones (economy, priority, baggage drop-off), while encouraging online check-in and check-in the evening before to reduce processing times in the early hours of the morning. A new test is already scheduled for the Easter holidays, with a clear objective: to have sufficient elements to decide on the organisation for summer 2026.
