The figures were published by mobility minister François Bausch (déi gréng), in response to a parliamentary question from MP Marc Goergen (Pirate Party).

In 2019, the country introduced direct subsidies for the purchase of low car emission vehicles, of up to €2,500 on electric hybrid-plug-ins (with CO2 emissions under 50g/km) and €5,000 on fully electric cars.

Bausch wrote that from January to May 2019, some 547 electric vehicles and 237 hybrid plug-ins had been newly registered in Luxembourg.

People who purchased cars that meet the criteria can apply for this new subsidy seven months after the vehicle purchase. The refund period began on 1 August. Further details on applying for the subsidy can be found here.
