As is customary, the CFL has chosen the Easter holidays to press ahead with work designed to shape “the mobility of tomorrow.” But in the meantime, cross-border commuters will have to cope with restricted train services on certain lines between 5 and 21 April. Here are the lines affected and the proposed alternative solutions.
Between Luxembourg and Bettembourg
During the holiday period, CFL will be continuing extension work on the Howald interchange. In particular, this involves continuing the construction of a staircase and installing a new one to provide access to the nearby tram stop. They will also take the opportunity to prepare for the renewal of part of the tracks between Howald and Berchem, which will take place this summer. Finally, work will also continue on connecting the new line between Bettembourg and the capital.
As a result, train traffic will be blocked between the capital and Bettembourg in both directions. This section is the busiest on the country’s rail network.
An alternative service is planned between Bettembourg and the capital, in both directions, via the L60 bus route, with a stop at the Hildegard von Bingen bus stop.
Passengers travelling to Howald are advised to take the tram at the Lycée Vauban stop. For those wishing to travel to Berchem, replacement buses are also provided via the L61 line.
Between Esch-sur-Alzette and Luxembourg, it will be necessary to take the L62 line.
Between Luxembourg and Arlon
Between 5 and 21 April, there will also be no trains on the Luxembourg-Kleinbettingen-Arlon line due to track renewal work. During the holiday period, six kilometres of the section between Luxembourg and Bertrange will be resurfaced. The CFL will also be renewing the rainwater drainage system. The National Roads Administration (Administration des ponts et chaussées) will take the opportunity to carry out rehabilitation work on a bridge at Capellen.
Again, replacement buses will run between Luxembourg and Arlon (L50) and will serve all the usual stops. Direct buses are also planned (L52).
Between Ettelbruck-Gouvy and Kautenbach-Wiltz
On these lines, trains will be cancelled from 5 to 19 April between 7.40pm and 3.30am. Substitution buses are also planned (lines L15, L16 and L17).
