Development of the ‘Wunnen am Park’ neighbourhood is continuing in Esch-sur-Alzette. On 8 July, the Fonds du logement and the City broke ground on a new residential complex comprising 22 affordable homes, as part of an urban development project that will comprise around 900 homes.

On 8 July, the Fonds du logement and the City of Esch-sur-Alzette broke ground on a new residential development at 55, rue Guillaume Capus, in the ‘Wunnen am Park’ neighbourhood. Designed by Bruck + Weckerle Architekten, the project forms part of the ongoing development of this neighbourhood, which began in 2003 and will eventually comprise around 900 homes. The new building will comprise 22 flats intended exclusively for affordable rental, as well as two premises for self-employed professionals on the ground floor. The estimated cost of the project is €17.67m including VAT, with financial support from the ministry of housing and spatial planning.

Ultimately, two-thirds of the homes in the ‘Wunnen am Park’ neighbourhood will be managed by the City of Esch-sur-Alzette and one-third by the Fonds du logement. The public body has already developed a student hall of residence, seven residential blocks, 115 detached houses and four semi-detached houses. The neighbourhood also features schools, shops, local amenities and access to the public transport network, within a development designed around green spaces.

A user-centred design

The future residential development will offer one- to four-bedroom flats, ranging in size from 61 to 117m². Four flats will be adapted to meet the needs of people with reduced mobility. The flats will be accessed via a central walkway that crosses the inner courtyard, so as to avoid passing directly in front of the flats’ windows. Future residents will also have access to a communal terrace on the second floor, as well as a semi-underground car park.
