A new affordable housing project is taking shape in Esch-sur-Alzette. The Fonds du logement and the City of Esch-sur-Alzette have broken ground on a residential complex comprising 27 flats in the Wunnen am Park district, where development has been ongoing since 2003.

The Wunnen am Park neighbourhood continues to develop in Esch-sur-Alzette. The Housing Fund and the City of Esch-sur-Alzette have broken ground, marking the start of construction on a new residential complex that will provide 27 affordable rental homes. The properties will range from studio flats to four-bedroom flats, with living areas of between 51 and 120m². Three of the flats will be adapted to meet the needs of people with reduced mobility.

The project includes a range of communal facilities for residents: a multi-purpose room with a kitchenette, storage areas for bicycles and pushchairs, and storage spaces. A landscaped inner courtyard will complete the development, alongside a roof garden accessible to all residents. An underground car park with 41 spaces will also form part of the project.

A neighbourhood set to accommodate nearly 900 homes

This new development forms part of the expansion of the Wunnen am Park neighbourhood, which was launched in 2003 in collaboration with the City of Esch-sur-Alzette. The neighbourhood now features public facilities, schools, shops, local amenities and a connection to the public transport network. Ultimately, it will comprise around 900 homes. According to the press release, the City of Esch-sur-Alzette will develop two thirds of these homes, whilst the Housing Fund will build the remaining third. The public body has already brought to market a student residence, seven residential complexes, 115 single-family homes and four semi-detached homes.

An investment of over €25m

The estimated cost of the project is €25.05m including VAT. The project is receiving financial support from the ministry of Housing and Regional Planning. The architectural firm Coeba is responsible for the project design. SGI Ingénierie is carrying out the structural and technical studies, D3 Coordination is handling health and safety coordination, SECTB is responsible for technical supervision, Schroeder & Associés is conducting the acoustic studies, and Cocert is providing energy consultancy.
