From summer 2026, a major shift will take place in mobile payments in Luxembourg. Wero, the pan-European digital wallet developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), will progressively replace Payconiq, which is still widely used today. This new solution, already operational in Germany, France and Belgium since 2024, will be gradually rolled out in Luxembourg over the coming months.
This development, supported by several Luxembourg banks including Spuerkeess, aims to offer an instant, secure and interoperable payment solution at a European scale, designed to meet the growing needs of cross-border users. In this context, Spuerkeess is positioning itself as a key player in the transition, as explained by Serge Wagener, Head of the “Daily Banking” Business Unit.
Concretely, what will change with the arrival of Wero in Luxembourg?
Serge Wagener. – “The main change lies in the tool users will rely on for their daily mobile payments. Today, many customers use Payconiq, either through their banking app or via the dedicated app. With Wero, they will switch to a new, fully dedicated application that allows them to carry out exactly the same operations: sending or receiving money, paying a bill, making a purchase in-store or completing an online payment.
Why is Payconiq being discontinued?
S.W. – “Payconiq has worked very well, but its scope was national or regional. Payments today are European and cross‑border. With Wero, the ambition is to offer a harmonised, pan‑European and sovereign solution that can operate in as many countries as possible under the same rules.
How will the transition take place?
S.W. – “Gradually. Between July and September 2026, Payconiq and Wero will operate in parallel, which will allow users to continue using Payconiq while discovering Wero. From October 2026 onwards, Payconiq will be definitively phased out in favour of Wero, which will become the only available mobile payment solution.
Will this make payments more complicated for users?
S.W. – “No. The experience will remain intuitive and very similar to what users know today. Payments will continue to be instant. Customers will still use a phone number or scan a QR code. The only requirement is that the counterpart must also be registered on Wero. Invoice payments featuring a Payconiq QR code will still be possible during the transition. Ultimately, the change affects the infrastructure supporting the solution rather than the way people pay.
What does this change mean for businesses and associations?
S.W. – “For professionals, the transition to Wero will also follow a phased schedule. Between July and September 2026, Payconiq and Wero will coexist, allowing companies and associations to continue using Payconiq while preparing their move to Wero. From October 2026 onwards, Wero will become the single reference solution. The main difference compared with private users concerns the integration model. Until now, Payconiq managed business onboarding and provided technical solutions such as invoice QR codes. With Wero, the market opens up further: several players, including Spuerkeess, will be able to offer these services. This provides more choice but also requires tailoring the transition to each organisation’s specific needs.
How will you support this transition?
S.W. – “At Spuerkeess, we will support professional clients so they can fully benefit from the possibilities offered by the solution, whether for invoice payments via QR code, in‑store payments or e-commerce transactions. Integration will depend on the operational context of each business or association, including payment volumes, technical infrastructure and the level of automation desired. Our goal is to ensure a responsible and structured transition by offering solutions tailored to each organisation.
Why would a business or association choose Spuerkeess for this transition?
S.W. – “Because we offer an integrated solution directly linked to our professional banking services, combined with close support. This also helps maintain financial flows within the Luxembourg ecosystem – an important advantage for retailers and associations.
Will this cost more?
S.W. – “For individuals, no. The service will remain free. For professionals, pricing will depend on banking agreements. But the objective is to remain competitive. We are not seeking to increase costs, but to move towards a sustainable European solution.
Will WERO replace bank cards?
S.W. – “In the short term, no. Cards remain widely used. Wero will be a complementary alternative, particularly practical for everyday payments. This is an evolution, not a replacement.
And in the future? Will the WERO app evolve?
S.W. – “Yes, absolutely. WERO is a foundation on which additional services will gradually be added: subscription management, automatic payments, rental deposit payments and more. The objective is to further simplify payments, including abroad. This is not a static application – Wero will continue to evolve to meet future needs.”
