Reactions were swift on the evening of Sunday 12 April, after Viktor Orbán, Hungary’s outgoing prime minister, admitted in his own words to his ‘painful’ defeat in the general election held in his country that weekend. And this, even though Three Luxembourg MPs were monitoring the election proceedings.
The Prime Minister of Luxembourg Luc Frieden (CSV) welcomed the fact that Hungary had “chosen the European path. Congratulations to Peter Magyar on his victory this Sunday evening. I look forward to working together at a time when Europe must stand more united and stronger than ever.”
The former Prime Minister and current Foreign Secretary, Xavier Bettel (DP) also congratulated Hungary’s newly elected Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, in a tweet adorned with emojis.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron also took to Twitter to comment on the outcome of the general election.
