It’s not just the animals that are getting on in years at Parc Merveilleux. Beneath the paths, some of the power lines are now 70 years old. In Esch-sur-Alzette, a campsite that opened in 1962 is set to enter a new era.
1. Parc Merveilleux: €2.94m to upgrade the utility networks
The Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg needs to ensure it has the resources to continue growing. The electrical transformer it shares with the local council has reached its capacity limits. The APEMH has already had to install a generator to secure the power supply to the restaurant, and any further electrical extensions are now out of the question. A transformer dedicated exclusively to the park will therefore be installed. It will be required, in particular, to supply power to the extension of the workshops and the restaurant, new attractions, solar panels and charging points.
The project will also involve replacing an initial batch of 70-year-old power lines, as well as drinking water and stormwater pipes. This phase covers the workshops, staff accommodation, the administration block and the canteen.
Announced cost: €2.51m excluding VAT, or €2.94m including VAT. The APEMH Foundation may receive a grant covering up to 50% of the eligible investment.
2. Gaalgebierg Campsite: a €12.62m refurbishment
This is the most significant of the three projects. The City of Esch-sur-Alzette intends to completely redevelop the Gaalgebierg campsite, upgrade its roads and utility networks, modernise the sanitary facilities and diversify its accommodation options.
The scheme includes two areas set aside for unique accommodation, a playground, a multi-sports area, a 50-square-metre outdoor swimming pool, a paddling pool and a new central building. This building will house the toilet facilities, the reception, the swimming pool changing rooms and two catering areas, including a restaurant open to the general public.
The works are scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2029. The first phase will focus on the underground infrastructure. The second phase will involve the demolition of the current central building and the construction of its replacement. The swimming pool, leisure facilities and unique accommodation options will be added during the final phase.
Total cost: €10.79m excluding VAT, or €12.62m including VAT. The maximum funding rate will be 20% for the standard modernisation of the campsite and the part of the swimming pool reserved for it. It may reach 50% for unique accommodation options and swimming pool facilities accessible to the general public.
3. Three new huts at Déierepark: €4.15m
Just a short walk from the campsite, the Escher Déierepark is set to double its range of tree houses. The City of Esch is planning three new ‘Bamhaiser’: two that can accommodate four people, one of which will be accessible to people with reduced mobility, and a third with space for six. The cabins will be set up around the red deer enclosure. This enclosure is to be completely refurbished: the government document describes it as dilapidated and no longer fully meeting current requirements, both in terms of visitor facilities and animal welfare.
Total cost: €3.55m excluding VAT, or €4.15m including VAT. It may be subsidised up to a maximum of 50%.
