Luxembourg Future Fund invested in satellite company Hydrosat to strengthen the country’s role in space innovation and sustainable finance.

The Luxembourg Future Fund, a joint initiative of National Credit and Investment Institution (SNCI), the Luxembourg development bank, and the European Investment Fund, announced on 30 September 2025 that it had invested in Luxembourg-headquartered Hydrosat, a company using satellite thermal imagery to address global resource and security challenges. Hydrosat’s technology supports decision-making in agriculture, water management and disaster prevention.

Pieter Fossel, chief executive and co-founder of Hydrosat, said the investment represented a “strong vote of confidence” in the company’s mission. He added that by using satellite data, Hydrosat aimed to provide governments and agribusinesses with tools to increase resilience, secure supply chains and improve food production.

Satellite technology and global challenges

Hydrosat combines satellite imagery with proprietary algorithms to deliver near real-time insights into soil moisture, crop health and water usage. The company stated that its technology allows farmers to optimise irrigation and improve yields while also helping food companies manage supply chains more effectively.

Royce Dalby, president and co-founder of Hydrosat, underlined the urgency of such tools, noting that the World Resources Institute projected 3bn people would face extreme water stress by 2050. He said Hydrosat’s thermal infrared satellites and artificial intelligence-powered analytics enabled “clear insights anywhere on Earth”, supporting policymakers, agribusinesses and farmers in taking action.

Luxembourg government support

Luxembourg’s finance minister, Gilles RothGilles Roth (CSV), said the investment demonstrated how the country’s venture capital framework allowed innovation and sustainability-driven companies to thrive. He added that the Luxembourg Future Fund 2 investment into Hydrosat reinforced Luxembourg’s role as a hub for sustainable finance and space technology.

Lex DellesLex Delles (DP), minister of the economy, small and medium-sized enterprises, energy and tourism, said Hydrosat exemplified the type of forward-looking entrepreneurship Luxembourg aimed to promote. He emphasised that supporting such initiatives enhanced the country’s competitiveness and accelerated its shift towards a more sustainable and resource-efficient economy.
