Coinbase this week announced the appointment of Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux as senior country director of Coinbase Luxembourg. The appointment comes a few months after the company obtained its Mica licence in Luxembourg, a decisive step for its operations in Europe. The country thus becomes Coinbase’s nerve centre in the implementation of the new European regulatory framework for cryptoactives.
“I am delighted to join the team as we continue to expand our services across the European Union. Luxembourg has long played a key role in the crypto ecosystem and, as Coinbase’s Mica hub, offers the ideal environment to shape the future of digital finance within a forward-looking, pro-business regulatory framework. Coinbase’s mission is to increase economic freedom around the world - and with Mica, Europe is taking a major step towards a clear and unified regulatory framework for crypto. I am excited to work with the exceptional team at Coinbase and support our customers and partners across the region to build the future of the crypto industry together,” said Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux.
This appointment illustrates Coinbase’s desire to consolidate its European footprint, at a time when the regulatory clarity provided by Mica is attracting more and more international players to Luxembourg. Daniel Seifert, vice president & regional managing director for EMEA, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Jean-Baptiste to Coinbase. His extensive experience in both traditional finance and the crypto industry will be invaluable as we continue to grow in EMEA. The region plays a vital role in the development of the global crypto economy, and under Jean-Baptiste’s leadership, we look forward to accelerating our mission to increase freedom and economic opportunity through crypto.”
Prior to joining Coinbase, Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux led Bitstamp, one of the oldest cryptocurrency exchanges, which he saw through to its successful sale in 2025 to Robinhood. He has also held senior positions at eBay Europe, where he oversaw regulatory operations and board governance, and at PayPal, as chief compliance officer for the EMEA region.
