Fernand Etgen is resigning as an MP for “personal reasons”. Born on 10 March 1957 in Ettelbruck, Fernand Etgen entered politics in 1979 by becoming a member of the DP and joining the Feulen local council, where he served as councillor from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1988 to 1993. He was also alderman of this municipality from 1982 to 1987 before becoming its mayor in 1994.

Deputy for the North constituency, he was first elected in 2007. Between 2018 and 2023, he was Minister for Agriculture, Viticulture and Consumer Protection, as well as Minister for Relations with Parliament in the first government of the DP-LSAP-déi Gréng coalition led by Xavier Bettel. Re-elected as a Member of Parliament in 2018, he became President of the Chamber of Deputies. Prior to his political career, he was a state civil servant with the Administration de l’enregistrement et des domaines.

From journalism to politics

He will be replaced by Marc Hansen, DP candidate for the North constituency in 2023, he came third behind Fernand Etgen and André Bauler, both of whom were elected. Born in 1971, he worked as a journalist between 1995 and 2009 for RTL Radio Lëtzebuerg and RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg. From 2009 to 2011, he was a parliamentary attaché, and from 2011 to 2014, he was appointed director and managing director of Éditions Lëtzebuerger Journal. He was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2013. In 2014, he joined the first Bettel government as Secretary of State for National Education, Children and Youth, and Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research. He succeeded André Bauler (DP), who resigned for health reasons. In December 2018, he was appointed Minister for Housing, Minister Delegate for Higher Education and Research.
