The CFL, Luxembourg’s national railway company, maintains its position as the grand duchy’s largest employer. It had a workforce of 5,110 people on 1 January 2025, according to the latest Statec figures. That’s an increase of 120 employees compared to the previous year.
Each year, the national institute for statistics and economic studies compiles a list of the country’s largest employers based on a voluntary survey. The survey targets Luxembourg-based companies or groups of companies with at least 90 employees. For the 2025 edition, 387 structures responded, from industry, commerce, construction or services.
“Given the non-mandatory nature of the survey, the list of the main employers cannot be exhaustive,” the institution points out. “Its completeness depends on the willingness of respondents to participate in the survey and to authorise Statec to disseminate the information collected. For this edition of the list, the coverage rate thus defined is 64%.”
Who comes after the CFL? The Dussmann Luxembourg group, which operates mainly in the cleaning sector, remains firmly anchored in second place, with 4,880 employees (+170 over one year). Post Luxembourg retains third place, with 4,450 employees recorded by Statec.
Amazon, meanwhile, overtakes Cactus to take fourth place, with an increase of 100 employees, taking its workforce to 4,370. The only newcomer to the top 10 this year is Cargolux, which makes its debut in the rankings after taking over Luxair’s cargo activities. This operation was accompanied by the transfer of some 1,200 employees. It is worth noting that BGL BNP Paribas (-10) and PWC (-250) are the only members of the top 10 to record a fall in their headcount this year.
