A former journalist and then deputy editor-in-chief of Tageblatt, Mars Di Bartolomeo entered politics - on the LSAP lists - in the 1980s, first becoming a local councillor for the town of Dudelange, where he was mayor from 1994 to 2004. He was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1989, where he was re-elected in 1994, 1999 and 2004. In July of that year, he was appointed Minister of Health and Minister of Social Security, a post he held for just over nine years. In 2013, he became President of the Chamber of Deputies, a post he held until 2018. He is currently Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Chairman of the Committee on Institutions and Constitutional Review and Chairman of the Committee on Health and Sport. Mars di Bartolomeo is also Treasurer of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie.
