Global law firm White & Case LLP has expanded its team in Luxembourg with the of funds partner on Thursday 16 May. John Reiss, who heads the firm’s global M&A practice, stated that Luxembourg holds significant importance in both European and global contexts for funds formation, private equity capital raising and transactional activities. Reiss noted that a considerable portion of mergers and acquisitions transactions in Europe take place in Luxembourg, with an estimated 90% of global private equity investments structured using Luxembourg vehicles. Gutton’s appointment as partner in Luxembourg aims to strengthen White & Case’s ability to provide advisory services on funds formation in Luxembourg and globally, highlighted Reiss.

Prior to joining the firm, Gutton served as deputy CEO and general counsel at the Association of the Luxembourg Fund Industry. With over 15 years of experience in funds and related matters, Gutton’s expertise spans advising on the creation, structuring and conversion of funds across various asset classes, including private equity and real estate.

Thierry Bosly, co-head of the global private equity industry group at White & Case, highlighted Luxembourg’s prominence as Europe’s largest investment fund centre and second globally after the US. He stressed that Gutton will collaborate closely with current Luxembourg funds partner Arnaud Cagi-Nicolau to address the growing demand for funds advice from clients and explore new opportunities.

White & Case partner and vice chair Oliver Brettle underscored the firm’s recent investments in leading private equity and mergers and acquisitions partners, as well as consistent partner promotions in these areas. Brettle noted the strategic expansion of the Luxembourg office and highlighted the earlier arrival of partner Cagi-Nicolau in March 2022, which has increased the demand for specialised funds expertise in Luxembourg.
