Officials--including the transport minister (DP), Luxembourg City mayor (DP) and alderman (DP), Niederanven mayor Fréd Ternes (CSV) and Luxtram managing director Helge Dorstewitz--attended the first test of a new section of the Luxtram system on Tuesday 10 December.
Section E of the tramway, 3.9km long, will link Kirchberg to Findel Airport, serving two new hubs: Héienhaff P&R and Findel - Luxembourg Airport. The tram will run alongside the Grünewald forest, then take a boulevard through the Findel business park to reach the airport.
Construction began in 2021, with key phases including installation of a bridge over the A1 motorway, construction of the platform and rigorous testing. After a period of tests and trials, operational service is scheduled to begin on 2 March 2025, marking the completion of the 16km of Luxembourg's first tramway line.

Seven years on
Since the initial entry into service of the tramway between Luxexpo and Rout Bréck - Pafendall on 10 December 2017, the network has been gradually extended. First with the addition of stations in 2018 going up to Stäreplaz/Place Étoile, then heading south.
Then in 2020 an extension connected the central train station in the Gare district. That was also the year in which the tram become free, like all other public transport in the country. Still heading south, two new stations opened in 2022: Leschte Steiwer/Dernier Sol and Lycée Bouneweg. The final stage was completed on 7 July 2024, when the line was extended southwards to the national stadium (Stade de Luxembourg), providing service to five new stations.
In March 2025, the line will extend northwards to Luxembourg airport, covering a total distance of 16km.
