Edward Steichen’s historic exhibition The Family of Man, permanently preserved under the UNESCO Memory of the World register, continues to exert a profound influence on contemporary photographic practices and collecting. Co-organized in collaboration with the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel (CNA), this panel discussion examines the visual and conceptual echoes between this humanistic masterpiece and contemporary creation through the specific lens of the private Teutloff Collection.
In an insightful conversation with art critic and journalist Claudia Dichter, curator Sabine Weichel-Kickert presents her new book, THE FAMILY OF MAN im Dialog mit der TEUTLOFF COLLECTION. The discussion reveals how Steichen’s curated themes inspired Lutz Teutloff to build his own collection of contemporary photography. The speakers pull back the curtain on the distinct marketing and promotional strategies that drove the Teutloff Collection, analyzing how private artistic initiatives engage with broader institutional standards.

Speakers’ Biographies
Sabine Weichel-Kickert has worked as a freelance curator and art educator since 1997. She established and managed the Teutloff Collection, successfully facilitating its long-term transfer to the CNA Steichen Collections in Luxembourg. In 2018, she completed her doctoral thesis focusing on the critical dialogue between the two collections. She is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Paderborn and a member of the interdisciplinary working group World Heritage Education.
Claudia Dichter studied art history, German literature, and philosophy in Aachen and Cologne. Since 1992, she has worked as an author and art critic for WDR, hosting the cultural program Scala on WDR5 from 2002 to 2025 and the cultural show Resonanzen on WDR3 since 2019. She has curated numerous exhibitions at notable institutions, including Museum Bochum, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, and the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.
The 12th edition of Luxembourg Art Week will take place from November 20 to 22, 2026.
