Ground staff at eleven German airports, including the major hubs of Frankfurt and Munich, have been called to join the public sector strike on Monday 10 March. Several flights from Luxembourg could be affected.

“There will be massive restrictions on departures and arrivals, up to and including flight cancellations,” declared Verdi, the German services union, in a press release published on Friday 7 March, concerning a strike call for Monday 10 March.

The strike concerns staff at Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen and Leipzig-Halle airports. The main German airports are therefore likely to be severely disrupted. Berlin/Brandenburg airport announced on Friday that it would cease operations completely on Monday due to the strike.

Flights to and from Luxembourg operated by Luxair, Lufthansa and Air Dolomiti could therefore be affected.

A series of strikes have taken place in Germany in recent weeks, as unions attempt to put pressure on the federal and local governments in the third round of negotiations on a collective agreement covering some 2.5m public sector workers, explains the Belga press agency.

Verdi is demanding an 8% pay rise, with a minimum of €350 per month, as well as higher allowances for arduous jobs and three extra days off.
