The tram currently circulates between Luxexpo in Kirchberg and the central train station, with its extension towards the Cloche d’Or under construction. But plans for a second branch in Kirchberg seem to be progressing as the district is set to expand behind Boulevard Konrad-Adenauer with new residential projects adding around 10,000 residents in the next ten to 15 years.

Transport minister François Bausch (Déi Gréng) told the Luxemburger Wort that a feasibility study had concluded and that he has charged Luxtram to provide all necessary details to start putting together a bill to finance the project. Any government spending exceeding €40m must be voted by parliament.

The transport ministry and Luxtram did not immediately respond to requests for comment by Delano’s sister publication, Paperjam.

The bill should be presented to the cabinet under prime minister Xavier Bettel (DP) before the end of 2022, from where it could proceed to parliament for a vote before the next elections in 2023.
