“During consumer surveys, self-service terminals were one of the most frequent requests, which is why we wanted to meet this need,” explains Lidl Luxembourg spokesman Julien Wathieu.
On 26 July 2024, the German chain announced the deployment of self-checkouts in its Bertrange shop, a first for Lidl in Luxembourg. These checkouts will not replace traditional checkouts, where an employee is responsible for scanning items, but they will be added to the existing range.
Expansion to other Lidls
The company says it will equip four more shops by the end of the year. “The programme will continue with other stores coming on stream in the next few weeks,” says the company, “namely Windhof, Beggen and Dudelange. What’s more, shops that are about to be renovated or newly opened will also automatically be equipped with new self-service checkouts.”
“Our aim is always to make life easier for people who visit our Lidl shops. Thanks to these new self-service checkouts, we hope to make it easier and quicker for our customers to shop with us,” Wathieu tells Paperjam.
“The shops will be equipped with between six and ten self-checkouts, depending on their size,” he further specifies.
Present in Luxembourg since 2001, Lidl is one of the leaders in the Luxembourg discount food market. The chain has 13 outlets in the country, compared with 18 for its big rival, Aldi. Lidl intends to continue its expansion across the country with further openings, particularly in the south.
