“Let’s just say that we’re in a busy phase of the works, which should be completed in 2027.” In the meantime, CFL users will have to be patient, explained Marc Hoffmann, director of infrastructure management at the Luxembourg rail company, at a press conference on Tuesday 28 January. “But we are doing our utmost to carry out the work during off-peak periods such as school holidays.”
For 2025, here are the main routes affected by construction work--and therefore traffic stoppages.

From 24 March to 4 April inclusive

Progressively from 2027, the new line will make it possible, with the extension of the platforms at the stations/stops served between Bettembourg and Luxembourg, to increase the number of seats by 50% and offer the potential to run eight trains per hour on the Luxembourg-Thionville-Metz line (excluding the TGV),” states the CFL.
There will also be no trains on the Luxembourg-Kleinbettingen-Arlon line.

+46% seats in 2026
2024 was marked by 264 days of works. “To compensate for the interruption of train traffic between Thionville, Esch-sur-Alzette and Luxembourg (and vice versa), 800 daily bus trips were organised, i.e., around a hundred buses and 200 drivers mobilised each day. An overall and personalised view of the impact of the works is available via the works tool introduced in 2024 on www.cfl.lu or via the CFL mobile application,” specified passengers activities director Sophie Lacour on Tuesday 28 January.
The gradual commissioning--since the last quarter of 2024--of 34 new CFL Coradia-type multiple units (six in service to date), for an amount of €400m, is complementary to the CFL’s multi-year investment programme in the rail network. By 2026, the number of seats will increase by 46%. The CFL bus fleet, for its part, is following its gradual electrification path, notably with the entry into service of the first of the 12 eCitaro buses during the first half of 2025.
Several projects to be completed in 2025
“With 31.3m passengers in 2024, an increase of 10% compared to 2023 and more than 1,000 trains per day on the Luxembourg rail network, we are more than ever focused on quality, punctuality and safety objectives,” also insisted , CEO of the CFL. Among the major projects that will be completed this year 2025, there is, notably, the construction of the second platform of the Howald interchange hub or the reconfiguration of the southern part of Luxembourg’s central station.
Located along the Luxembourg-Ettelbruck-Troisvierges-Gouvy line, the Troisvierges P+R will be completed in the first half of 2025 and will offer 388 parking spaces. Two other aboveground car parks will be added in 2025 in Colmar-Berg (237 spaces) and Wecker (166 spaces in 2025). The construction of a new car park in Walferdange offering 99 spaces will also be launched this year.
