Three-year old Luxembourg Touch has placed ninth men’s open section during the Mainland Cup in Vienna last weekend.

The team was beaten out by Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and tournament champions France in the fourth round on Saturday, while still going on to win matches against Catalonia and Guernsey on Sunday.

Twelve teams competed in the category, which “is the very highest level at which touch is played internationally”, the Grand Duchy’s national touch rugby team told the press.

“Our focus on developing younger players had really paid off”, team member Paul Sweetnam said. That included 15 year old Cameron Cullen, who scored during his international debut (photo).

Looking ahead, team captain Edoardo Agnioni stated: “We will now work hard on our next goal to send teams to the 2014 European Championships and then the next World Cup in Australia in 2015.”

Luxembourg Touch plans to field men’s open, mixed and over-40s squads down under.

Touch rugby is a six-a-side non-contact form of rugby played on a half sized pitch, often with mixed gender teams.

Luxembourg Touch is part of the Rugby Club Luxembourg, and trains and plays Tuesday nights at Stade Michel Wagner in Weimerskirch. The team welcomes new players and supporters.
