The fifth Luxembourg Junior Squash Tournament was held this weekend at the Top Squash Club in Sandweiler. The tournament, sponsored by the Spuerkeess, Loterie Nationale, and BNY Mellon, is an event on the tournament circuit of the European and World Squash Federations and attracted an impressive field of from 9 different countries.
In the boys under-13 (B U-13) draw, a fine performance by Sebastian Hofman (Netherlands) gave him the title over the no.1 seed, Harold Castiaux (Belgium), Pieter de Loos (Netherlands) finishing 3rd. The B U-15 draw gave local players Miguel Duarte and Tumi Tomasson the opportunity to shine, but David Maier (Liechtenstein) proved too strong, eliminating Tumi in the semi-finals and Miguel in the final. Sebastian de la Vega (Spain) finished 3rd.
The boys under-17 group produced some squash of the highest quality, and resulted in a clean sweep for the Belgian team, Sanjay Jeeva producing a fine controlled game to defeat his compatriot, Jean-Luc Callebaut 3-0 in the final, 3rd place being taken by Arnaud Masset.
In the main competition, the B U-19, the exciting final thrilled the large crowd, with Patrick Maier (Liechtenstein) just winning 3-2 (11-9 in the 5th set) against the impressive Christophe Winzer (Netherlands) who had led 2-0. Thijs van der Pluijm (Netherlands) took 3rd place.
Dutch dominate girls
In the girls under-13 competition, Lianka Radzyminski (Netherlands) dominated and won without conceding a set, Luxembourg’s Lisa Nightingale finishing second ahead of Maya Darlington (Ireland). Brooke Herring (Canada) won the G U-15 draw, showing her superiority over Gabi Fritsche (Netherlands) and Virginie Gustin (Belgium).
The G U-19 draw resulted in a clear victory for the strong Megan van Drongelen (Netherlands), although local player Stella Nightingale played well to finish second. Joy Verbeeck (Belgium) finished 3rd.
The age group trophies, offered by the Spuerkeess, were presented by Simone Massard, mayor of Sandweiler, Yolande Roller, alderman of Sandweiler, and by Matthew Radley, of the Squash Federation. The Fair Play Trophy, offered by LABgroup, was presented to Megan van Drongelen (Netherlands).
