Autism is a neurological developmental disorder that affects approximately 1% of the European population. In Luxembourg, social sector professionals working with autistic individuals receive hundreds of diagnostic requests each year, and the number of people using their support and care services continues to rise. As a result, the need for trained professionals in social services, education, and healthcare has become crucial.

To address this growing demand, the is launching a new university certificate: “Understanding Autism for Better Inclusion.” This programme is designed to help professionals gain a deeper understanding of autism and actively contribute to the inclusion of autistic children and adults.

This comprehensive program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to implement respectful and adapted initiatives within their professional environment. By doing so, they will play a key role in fostering more inclusive communities.

The certificate stands out for its multidisciplinary approach and strong practical component. Taught by experts in the field of autism, the program combines theoretical insights from academic research with well-established approaches and working methods, allowing participants to quickly develop practical skills.

The programme is intended for professionals in social work, healthcare and education who may work with autistic individuals as part of their daily activities (psychologists, teachers, educators, caregivers, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, psychomotor therapists, etc.). Additionally, professionals from other sectors who wish to become inclusion ambassadors within their organisations are also strongly encouraged to join.

The training spans two semesters and includes six course modules covering the following topics:

• Introduction to autism

• Diagnosis

• Interventions, approaches and support

• Education, training and employment

• Independent living (family life, leisure, sports, and housing)

• Professional project

Participants will also have the opportunity to exchange experiences with other professionals, enriching their skills and knowledge. Upon successful completion of the program, they will be awarded a university certificate (equivalent to 10 ECTS credits).

An information session will be held on Thursday 3 April 2025, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Belval Campus of the University of Luxembourg.
