The number of Luxembourgers leaving the country has increased by 7% in one year, according to Statec. It underlines the importance of immigration in the demographic balance and, in particular, that of Ukrainians.

15,412 inhabitants joined the ranks of the resident population in Luxembourg on 1 January 2023, Luxembourg’s statistics bureau Statec announced on Tuesday 18 April, on the basis of data collected during the . As a result of Russia’s war in Ukraine, Ukrainian immigrants accounted for more than one in four arrivals with a total of 4,268 nationals. Their arrivals increased by 42.1% in one year. A particular feature is that women account for almost 7 out of 10 Ukrainians in Luxembourg.

On the outgoing side, Portuguese nationals were the most numerous to leave Luxembourg (3,547), just ahead of Luxembourgers, who numbered 3,273, i.e., . “More and more Luxembourgers are leaving the country, which leads to a negative migratory balance of -1,691: 1,582 Luxembourg immigrants for 3,273 Luxembourg emigrants,” according to Statec.

One Luxembourger in five has two passports

If in one year the population grew by 2.4% to 660,809 residents, it is mainly thanks to net migration, which reached 14,206 people, i.e., seven times more than the natural balance (births and deaths) of 2,046 people. “The share of international migration in population growth is therefore 92.2% in 2022,” says Statec.

In total, non-Luxembourgers accounted for 47.4% of the population on 1 January, which represents a slight increase of 0.3 percentage points. While Luxembourgers account for 52.6% of the population, Statec states that one in five (20.6%) has a second nationality, mainly Portuguese (25.3%), French (14.4%) and Italian (7.8%).

On the topic of dual nationals, the number of acquisitions of Luxembourg nationality jumped by 54.5% in one year to reach 10,499 individuals in 2022. Statec explains this by the expiry--on 31 December 2022--of the recovery procedure based on descent on 1 January 1900.

In any case, one in two new Luxembourgers does not live in Luxembourg. Among them, Brazilian residents are the most numerous (62.7%), followed by Americans (16.4%) and French people (9.9%).

Fewer births in Luxembourg

In 2022, the number of births fell by 2.9% to 6,495. This had an impact on the fertility rate, which fell from 1.38 children to 1.31 children per woman. Deaths fell by almost one percent over the year to 4,449.

77.1% of deaths in the country are attributed to residents of Luxembourg nationality, which illustrates the younger age structure of the foreign population.

On average, the age of death occurs at 81.3 years for women and 74.3 years for men. Covid-19 being cited as a cause of death has fallen from to 6.2% last year.

Finally, it should be noted that was seen in terms of marriages, which increased by 27.2% in 2022, with 475 unions, 35 of which were between people of the same sex. Divorces decreased by 11.2% to 1,243. On average, the duration of a dissolved marriage in Luxembourg last year was 13 years.
