Luxembourg might in the future have its own version of the Uber taxi platform, which would be managed by the state.

According to RTL, transport minister François Bausch is developing a similar service. Uber allows users to order a taxi through an app which also indicates price ranges among others. Driving times, social security and taxes had been an issue between the US company and the Luxembourg state, reason for which the business had not made its way into the grand duchy.

But a adopted in 2021 opened the market for rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, so long as labour law and social security requirements are met.

For Paulo Leitão, the president of Luxembourg’s taxi federation, “it could be a good idea.” Leitão tells Delano that “first, we have to see the details of the ‘Uber’ Mr Bausch wants to implement. It was also news to us.” Though other private options like Webtaxi and Hello Taxi already operate in the grand duchy, Leitão suggests that “maybe, if it’s a state-led platform, the conditions will be much better.”

Ultimately, Leitão argues that “it’ll be up to each boss to see what decision they will take. It might really help small independent owners who don’t have the means to set up their own central. When you connect to this type of central or app, there are always conditions: the connection duration, the price of fares, the cost for using the platform, … There are many questions but it can be good.”

The federation will meet up with Bausch at the start of July, Leitão tells Delano. At that time, the minister will present his plan for the platform and a taxi law reform in more details.

Delano has reached out to the ministry of transports for more details. The ministry told Delano that they “don’t have a specific date for the Taxi yet, due to the development of the platform. The new taxi legislation still has to be reformed.”
