France has as president for another five years. While he also leads the vote across the border from Luxembourg, his lead is smaller than the French average according to figures from the ministry of the interior.
Emmanuel Macron won 52.07% of the votes cast (excluding abstentions, blank and invalid votes) in the Grand Est, compared with 58.54% for France as a whole. Marine Le Pen obtained 47.93% of the votes cast in the region. The abstention rate was 26.31% of registered voters (compared to 28.01% of registered voters at national level) and blank votes represent 5.57% of ballots (6.35% in France).
The results were even closer in Moselle, where Emmanuel Macron received 50.46% of the votes cast and Marine Le Pen 49.54%. The abstention rate was 28.53%.
The re-elected president is more successful in Meurthe-et-Moselle, where he received 54.42% of the votes cast. Marine Le Pen came in at 45.58%, with an abstention rate of 27.08%.
Fewer abstentions in Thionville
The score of Emmanuel Macron improves in the large border towns of Moselle. He reached 67.19% of the votes cast in Metz and 63.93% in Thionville. He also took the lead, with 62.28%, in Mondorff. Abstention rates in these three cities were at 35.85%, 29.67% and 31.53%, respectively.
On the other hand, the municipality of Hayange, held by right-wing National Rally mayor Fabien Engelmann, saw Marine Le Pen once again come out on top with 58.74% of the vote, with an abstention rate of 34.04%.
On the Meurthe-et-Moselle side, Emmanuel Macron also came out on top in Longwy (59.37%) and in Villerupt (54.45%). The level of abstention remains high, in both cases, at 38.85%.
