Luxembourg is the richest country in the world according to the latest Hellosafe Prosperity Index, which assesses the wealth of 186 countries around the world. With a score of 86.2, Luxembourg is ahead of Norway (85.1) and Ireland (84.7), which complete the podium.
Unlike traditional rankings that focus mainly on GDP or GNP, the Hellosafe Prosperity Index is based on six indicators, combining economic, social and environmental development. These criteria, weighted differently, are used to award a score out of 100, reflecting a country’s overall prosperity. Here is a detailed list of the indicators, together with their sources and the weightings applied.
Countries of Northern and Western Europe dominate the top 20, with 14 representatives. Qatar (5th) and Singapore (6th) stand out as the leading non-European countries, whilst the United States and Canada rank 18th and 19th respectively. France, with a score of 60.4, rounds out the top 20.
At the other end of the spectrum, Mozambique occupies the last position with a score of 10.88, just behind the Central African Republic and Madagascar. The majority of African countries are also at the bottom of the table, although some, such as Mauritius (41.05), the Seychelles (40.77) and Algeria (40.36), stand out and are even ahead of several Eastern European and Balkan nations, such as Moldova (36.99), Macedonia (38.46) and Albania (38.52).
Yemen and Afghanistan are also among the least prosperous nations, with protracted conflicts and instability hampering their development, explains the report.
