The Maritime Law Convention: A landmark achievement
The Maritime Law Convention stands as a landmark achievement for Luxembourg’s maritime sector. Officially voted into law in December 2024, this pivotal legislation received overwhelming support during the initial vote on 10 December. Just ten days later, the Council of State approved the measure, eliminating the need for a second constitutional vote. This swift process highlights the urgency and significance of the legislation, which is set to transform the regulatory and operational landscape of maritime activities in Luxembourg.
By modernising Luxembourg’s maritime legal framework, the MLC updates the foundational legislation from 1990, ensuring alignment with the provisions established under the MLC of 2006. Adopted by the International Maritime Organisation, this convention sets comprehensive international standards. By aligning its legislation with these standards, Luxembourg not only reinforces its commitment to the welfare of maritime workers but also ensures that its maritime sector adheres to internationally recognised benchmarks.
Building on this solid foundation, the Luxembourg Maritime Cluster has initiated discussions with Maritime Affairs to outline forthcoming steps. These discussions will focus on implementing supportive policies, exploring innovative technologies, and strategies for the sector’s competitiveness.
Leadership and vision: ENMC reelection
Luxembourg also takes pride in the reelection of Fabrice Maire as chairman of the European Network of Maritime Clusters for the 2025-2027 term. His continued leadership reflects a strong vote of confidence in his vision and ability to steer the ENMC toward new heights. As the current chairman of the Luxembourg Maritime Cluster and Director of Intershipping, Fabrice Maire is well-positioned to represent Luxembourg’s maritime interests on the European stage.
Under his leadership, the ENMC has seen remarkable growth and strengthened cohesion among its members. Coordination will remain in the capable hands of Axelle Salvage, cluster manager of the Luxembourg Maritime Cluster, whose expertise, and dedication have been pivotal to the cluster’s achievements.
