Luxembourg has slipped one place in the latest Henley Passport Index, published on 8 January 2025, which assesses the passports of different countries according to their visa-free access to other destinations, based on data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). Now ranked fourth in the world, Luxembourg shares this position with Austria, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. All these passports allow visa-free travel to 191 destinations.
At the top of the rankings, Singapore retains its status as the holder of the most ‘powerful’ passport in the world, offering visa-free access to 195 countries. It is followed by Japan, whose citizens can travel freely to 193 destinations. In third place are France, Germany, Italy, Finland, South Korea and Spain (192 destinations), while Belgium, Portugal and the UK come fifth (190 destinations). The United States is in ninth place (184).
For Luxembourg citizens, the number of destinations accessible without a visa remains unchanged from the previous ranking. As a reminder, the country has always featured in the world’s top 4 since 2017, and has never dropped below sixth place since the index was created in 2006.
Despite this privileged access, 35 countries, including Russia, Cuba, India and Mali, still require a visa for Luxembourg nationals.
