Bio-Planet, the Belgian organic supermarket, has come to Luxembourg.

Over 500m2 and some 3,500 products: Bio-Planet is here. In Gasperich, specifically. The long-anticipated opening happened on 21 February.

Owned by the Colruyt Group, the shop shares a site with another of the group’s brands, Colruyt Meilleurs Prix.

In a press release, Colruyt Group says that it drew inspiration for the design of its outlet from the 30 or so stores already operating in Belgium. And it believes in the potential of its Gasperich location: “We have the opportunity to position ourselves in a unique way on the Luxembourg organic products market,” says business unit manager Jan Van Holsbeke.

He continues: “At the moment, this market consists mainly of a few specialist supermarkets, small players in the organic sector and large conventional shops offering an assortment of organic products. Bio-Planet, on the other hand, stands out as an organic specialist and supermarket with the country’s widest range of organic products under one roof. The higher standard of living compared to Belgium--especially in and around the capital--is an additional argument that prompted us to cross the border.”

Colruyt Group hopes, “in due time,” to open two more Bio-Planet shops in the grand duchy.

Local focus

Bio-Planet intends to focus on fresh vegetables, fruit and bread and promises a wide range of vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free products. “As Luxembourgers attach great importance to the origins of their food, our range also includes many local products, including beer, bread and fresh meat,” says Van Holsbeke. “We have established partnerships with around ten Luxembourg suppliers. For example, all the products in the bread and pastry sections are supplied by the local organic baker Tartefine, and we also offer exclusive rights to certain wines from the famous Clos Jangli company.”

For the supply of local products, Bio-Planet is relying on Colruyt’s new distribution centre in Dudelange for its non-refrigerated stock. Refrigerated goods are delivered directly by suppliers.

For customers, a “Collect&Go” service is also planned.
