In a press release issued Thursday morning, ING denies any new wave of closures of retail customer accounts, mentioned 48 hours ago by the trade unions, and is adapting its services by closing three branches and reassigning the seven employees to the bank’s other sites.

“We are making good progress in positioning ING as the preferred financial partner for our ‘wholesale, personal and private banking customers,” said the CEO of ING in Luxembourg, , in a statement on Thursday 26 September 2024. “We are aware of the importance of clear and direct communication with our customers and stakeholders regarding the repositioning of our bank. We have agreed a clear process with them, but no new wave of account closures has been planned. At our meeting earlier this week, the closure of the three branches was discussed confidentially with representatives of LCGB-SESF and Aleba. However, the closure of additional customer accounts was not part of the discussion.”

The branches in Kirchberg, Cloche d’Or and Rodange, which have operated by appointment only since 2021, will be closed from 1 December. The seven employees will be reassigned to the bank’s other sites. “The decision to concentrate our services in four branches [the head office in Luxembourg-Gare and the branches in Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbruck and Strassen] and to close the three branches above was supported by an analysis, carried out over several months, of customer visits to ING branches. This analysis showed that the total number of visits was limited; ING is convinced that customers’ needs will be better served in the remaining branches by ‘personal bankers’ and/or via the ‘contact centre.’”

“All customers affected by the branch closures will be informed in writing and offered alternatives. Customers will retain access to their accounts and will be able to continue to carry out their banking transactions via My ING, ING’s banking application (accessible via mobile devices and web browsers) and the contact centre. In addition, the Ettelbruck, Esch-sur-Alzette and Strassen branches and the head office at the railway station are open to customers with and without appointment (during normal opening hours). All four branches are easily accessible by public transport. The head office and Strassen branches also offer free parking,” reads the communiqué.
