Google announced on 18 March 2025 that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Wiz, a cybersecurity platform specialising in protecting cloud environments, for $32bn. The deal is the largest acquisition in the history of Alphabet, Google’s parent company.
The deal follows the failure of an initial takeover attempt in July 2024, when Alphabet offered $23bn to acquire the New York-based startup. At the time, Wiz and its investors considered the offer insufficient.
By getting its hands on Wiz, Google Cloud is strengthening its cybersecurity arsenal and confirming its ambition to rival Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS), its two main competitors in cloud computing.
“From its earliest days,” said Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a statement, “Google’s strong security focus has made us a leader in keeping people safe online. Today, businesses and governments that run in the cloud are looking for even stronger security solutions, and greater choice in cloud computing providers. Together, Google Cloud and Wiz will turbocharge improved cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds.”
Founded in 2020, Wiz offers a data analysis service to detect security risks. According to its website, it counts half of the 100 biggest companies in the United States among its customers.
