In 2024, Luxembourg’s environment administration carried out 401 checks in Luxembourg to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.

A series of checks done by the Luxembourg government’s environment administration (Administration de l’environnement or AEV) in 2024 totalled 401 inspections in various sectors of the country, said the AEV on 14 March 2025. These inspections concerned businesses, shops, industrial installations and roads, with a clear objective: to check compliance with environmental standards.

At the same time, in 2024, 427 complaints were lodged concerning problems relating to waste, noise, vibrations or pollution. Half of these reports came from citizens, the other half from the authorities or the grand-ducal police. The AEV carried out 230 field inspections and 178 administrative checks.

Chemicals under surveillance

Industrial emissions were the subject of 16 inspections. In terms of chemicals and biocides, 219 everyday items were examined, including windscreen washer fluids, floor mats, jewellery and electronic cigarettes. According to the AEV, 28 products had to be withdrawn from sale due to non-compliance.

The inspections also covered disinfectants used in school and company catering, and resulted in 32 of the 212 products analysed being found non-compliant, which led to 31 bans on sale. In addition, 10 bans were imposed on 21 products used to disinfect swimming pools.

With regard to regulations on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 25 products such as varnishes and paints were inspected. Two had non-compliant VOC content, while four posed problems in terms of labelling and packaging.

Waste shipments

Transboundary waste shipments were also scrutinised, with 34 checks being carried out near borders in collaboration with customs and the police. Officers inspected 1,685 vehicles, 457 of which were carrying waste. There were 229 offences recorded and 222 tax warnings issued for a total amount of €41,500.

The AEV is not content to simply impose penalties: it is also focusing on raising awareness. The companies concerned receive support to ensure that they comply with the regulations.
